Product Description
The watch industry was historically the first application field for artificial corun-dum crystals. As far back as 1704, Debraute and Fatio, mathematicians from Geneva, proposed to use gems in watch mechanisms, but this idea was economi-cally unfeasible at that time. As soon as ruby had been put into industrial produc-tion, the well-known Swiss watch companies “Breget,” “Denis Blondel,” and “Luis Odemar” took an interest in it, since this material – with its reasonable cost, stable quality, hardness, and wear resistance – turned out to be suitable for friction pairs. The coefficient of dry friction of a “ruby–steel” pair is 0.25 at a pressure on the order of 3.7 GPa. The coefficient of friction of artificial ruby on steel is lower and more stable in comparison with that of the natural stone.
